Bradley Wiggins may have powered over the line to win his 5th gold medal at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics but sadly he couldn’t quite make the show opening of the Motorhome & Caravan Show 2016 at the NEC Birmingham. Fortunately for those attending, his absence was soon forgotten as they got lost in a world of new product releases, thrilling industry innovations and celebrity appearances. The show, the largest leisure vehicle showcase in the country, had over 400 exhibitors on display and with so much to see, we just had to send a team down to report back on all of the latest trends and themes in the caravan world!

Hot New Debuts

Many of the manufacturers at the show were exhibiting new products for the very first time and we were excited to be able to get a sneak peek at the newest models. The Lunar Alaria really stood out. Launched by Great British Bake Off finalist Richard Burr, the super luxury Alaria range is designed to suit caravanners who may be looking to pitch their caravans on a semi-permanent basis. Bringing more comfort than ever to the Lunar brand, the Alaria has a unique L-shaped lounge and seating not unlike you would find in your living room at home! With an upgraded oven and a 21-inch widescreen TV as standard, the Alaria really could be your home away from home.

A must-have for Mods. If you want to channel a bit of Cool Britannia while you’re checking out the British Isles, then there is no better way than in a Swift Basecamp with the Target exterior graphic pack. This super cool number isn’t all about decoration however, the Basecamp is the perfect crossover vehicle for those who love to get out and take part in outdoor pursuits just as much as they love caravanning. The compact nature means it is easier to store and also possible for smaller cars to tow it. The Swift Basecamp is bringing a whole new generation of caravan lovers to the scene!

Top Tips From Graham Powell

A lot of the Motorhome & Caravan Show was dedicated to those who might be new to caravanning and special segments were put on with Caravan Finder TV host Graham Powell, dedicated to delivering some handy hints to the novices. We’ve included some of the best advice below.

  • Make sure that you have towing mirrors in place when towing, police are now really on the lookout for this and lack of mirrors can result in hefty fines and even points.
  • When travelling abroad, a competent Sat Nav can help you avoid getting lost. Driving on the other side of the road can sometimes be confusing enough anyway without having to navigate as well!
  • If you struggle erecting awnings (the infamous “divorce in a bag”!), think about investing in inflatable awnings that pretty much erect themselves. These sound like they are going to be seriously popular in the next year or so!
  • Always make sure that your driving license is valid and up to date, and that it covers you for driving and/or towing vans.

The show was truly enjoyable, extremely interesting and a real eye-opener and we can’t wait for the next one! Caravanning truly is a hobby of passion, so you may want to have protection in place, should the worst occur. E&L offer a range of benefits such as Fire and Theft, Accidental Damage and European Use as well as a 35% Intro discount.
